TAG Energy Solutions is leading the way in the UK in the development of the offshore wind industry supply chain.
Building upon extensive experience in offshore oil and gas, TAG ES identified opportunities in the renewables sector which require top quality transferable skills and expertise.
Chief Executive Alex Dawson, who has over 25 years experience across the offshore oil, gas and renewable energy industries, is a long-time believer in the wealth of opportunities the renewable sector offers, particularly in offshore wind.
“Offshore wind offers the biggest opportunity for UK industry since the oil and gas boom of the 1970s.
“This is the 21st century equivalent, with the potential to create significant employment and prosperity across the supply chain, particularly amongst those with the transferable skills from analogous industries, and bring massive economic benefits to this country.”
Grants from One North East and the Department of Energy and Climate Change, followed by private investment by Platina Partners and the Environmental Technologies Fund, have facilitated the construction of its £20 million offshore wind tubular production facility.
“By spring 2011 TAG ES will have a new facility online that will house automated production systems for the manufacture of the monopiles, tripods, jackets and transition pieces required for offshore wind turbine foundations,” said Alex.
“Construction of the facility’s shell is now complete and we are undertaking testing procedures prior to the installation of the specialist equipment.”
With the newly built factory now having a physical presence on the banks of the Tees, an important milestone has been laid in the creation of a robust and effective UK supply chain for the offshore wind market.
Alex believes the possibilities in the sector will have far-reaching effects, providing a stable and balanced energy platform translating into a positive future for the UK.
“Forecasts indicate that 45m tonnes of steel needs to be produced for the foundations alone for the wind effort in the UK, North Sea and Baltic. The numbers and the potential are huge, offering great prospects and benefits in terms of job creation, energy security and emissions reduction.
“The offshore renewables industry has the potential to regenerate entire regions and herald the re-emergence of manufacturing in the UK.”
